A tour of Anchor’s highly traditional brewhouse features old-school German copper kettles from the 1950s, purchased just before the brand moved to its current location, near Potrero Hill, in 1979. I embarked on such a two-day expedition that covered six of the best breweries the West Coast has to offer. Other Bay Area breweries that took home gold medals include Magnolia, for New Speedway Bitter, and Santa Clara Valley Brewing for their New Almaden Imperial Red Ale. Its original category? Wild Specialty Beer, a catch-all category that encompasses a number of different, related beer styles. A panel of judges tasted the best of show winners, by category, to arrive at the top three beers overall in California: Pilsnerish, a blonde ale from Flatland Brewing of Elk Grove, took first place Wobblor, a doppelbock from Crooked Lane Brewing located in Auburn, took second place and in third place was Apricot de Brettaville, from San Francisco’s Almanac Beer Co. Last month in Sacramento there was an award ceremony to present 126 awards in 42 separate categories, plus the top three best of show and brewery of the year. The state competition was taken over around five years ago by the Northern California Brewers Guild, and is now America’s third largest beer competition, after the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup. The California State Fair recently announced the winners of its commercial beer competition, choosing the best among over 1,500 beer entries. And recently a lot of the best ones were acknowledged and honored. Luckily, there are great beers up and down the state of California. August is the hottest month of the year, which also means it’s the best month for beer lovers.
